Straight answer

Do I need a permit for electrical work?

Short answer

Usually, for anything beyond a like-for-like repair. Panel replacements, service upgrades, meter base work and new circuits generally require a city permit and inspection. Swapping a failed outlet or switch generally does not. Hot Shot Electric Service Co. pulls the permit and schedules the inspection wherever the city requires one.

Each city in the Tulsa metro runs its own permit and inspection office, and each sets its own rules. The common thread: work that changes the electrical system needs a permit, and a licensed contractor has to pull it.

Work that usually needs a permit

  • Replacing or upgrading a breaker panel
  • Service upgrades, meter base and mast replacement
  • New circuits, including EV charger and hot tub circuits
  • Remodel wiring and additions
  • Pool and outdoor kitchen electrical

Work that usually does not

  • Replacing a failed outlet, switch or breaker with the same type
  • Swapping a light fixture or ceiling fan on an existing box
  • Repairing a loose connection
We handle itAny time we work on a panel, meter can or service, we pull the permit, schedule the inspection and coordinate with PSO. You do not have to visit the permit office.

Why licensing and permits connect

Oklahoma licenses electrical contractors through the Construction Industries Board, and an active contractor license requires current liability and workers' comp insurance. Cities check that the state license is active before they issue permits to a contractor. Hot Shot Electric Service Co. is licensed with the state (OK license #26574) and holds city registrations in the surrounding cities where we work.

Why it matters to you

  • An inspector checks the work, so you are not taking anyone's word for it.
  • Permitted work avoids problems with insurance claims after a loss.
  • Unpermitted electrical work can come up on a buyer's inspection when you sell.

If a home inspection flagged electrical items before a sale, call and describe what the report says. We will tell you whether it needs a permit and what the repair involves.

Selling a home with electrical items on the report

Buyer inspections often flag electrical items: missing GFCI protection, double-tapped breakers, an obsolete panel, open junction boxes. Some of those are simple repairs with no permit; panel and service items usually need one. Call with the report in hand and we will tell you what each item involves. One customer selling a home wrote that the inspection called for upgraded outlets in the kitchen and outside, and the crew got it all done in one morning.

Where to find your city's permit office

Each city in the metro has its own building or development services department that issues electrical permits. You do not need to contact them for work Hot Shot Electric Service Co. is doing; we do it. If you want to look up a permit or inspection for your property, your city's official website lists the office and its hours. The service area pages link to each city's official site.

Permits are part of every quote where they apply, so the price you approve already includes them. There is no separate trip to the city for you and no surprise fee at the end.

Follow-up questions

Who pulls the permit, me or the electrician?
For our work, we do. The permit is tied to the licensed contractor doing the job.
Does a permit slow the job down?
Usually not by much. The inspection is scheduled with the city, and panel and service jobs are coordinated with PSO's disconnect and reconnect windows.
Can you check work someone else did without a permit?
Yes. A safety inspection tells you what was done and whether it meets code, and we can quote bringing it up to standard.

Still not sure? Call and ask.

If it is something you can fix yourself, we will tell you. If it is not, a licensed journeyman comes out with the price before any work.
