Panel upgrade and replacement

Electrical Panel Upgrade and Replacement in Tulsa and Broken Arrow

Your panel is the heart of the house. When it is old, full, warm to the touch, or one of the brands inspectors flag, we replace it the right way: permitted, inspected, and coordinated with PSO.

Signs it is time

When a panel or breaker should be looked at

  • Breakers that trip often, or will not reset
  • A panel door that is warm, or a buzzing or crackling sound
  • Scorch marks, rust or a burning smell at the panel
  • Lights that dim when the AC or a big appliance starts
  • No open slots left for a new circuit
  • A panel 20 to 25 years old: the manufacturer recommendation is to replace it
  • Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok), Zinsco or other panels inspectors flag
  • Old screw-in fuses still in service
  • Adding an EV charger, hot tub, shop or addition

Done the right way

  • A load check before anything is sized
  • Permit pulled where the city requires it, inspection scheduled
  • PSO coordinated for the disconnect and reconnect
  • Every circuit labeled before we leave

Electrical panel upgrade and replacement in Tulsa and Broken Arrow

Your breaker panel, also called a breaker box or electrical panel, is where power from PSO is divided into the circuits that run your house. Every breaker in it protects a run of wire. When the panel is old, full, damaged, or one of the brands that inspectors and insurers flag, an electrical panel upgrade is one of the most important safety improvements you can make. Hot Shot Electric Service Co. has replaced panels in Tulsa, Broken Arrow and the surrounding towns since 1995.

Panel brands inspectors flag

The warning signs are listed above. Some older panel brands, including Federal Pacific Electric (Stab-Lok) and Zinsco, are widely flagged because their breakers may fail to trip. The manufacturer recommendation is to replace panels every 20 to 25 years, and especially if you have one of these brands. If you have one, have it looked at. A customer put it simply after a visit: the journeyman pointed out that the panel needed serious consideration because of its brand and age.

When to replace an electrical panel in Broken Arrow

Not every panel problem needs a new panel. A single failed breaker or a loose lug can be repaired. A panel that is in good shape but full may only need a subpanel. A panel that is unsafe, damaged or too small for the way you live now needs to be replaced, sometimes along with the service entrance and meter base. We do a load calculation before recommending a size, so you are not paying for capacity you will never use, and you are not undersized for the EV charger or hot tub you are planning.

A second opinion is welcomeIf you have been quoted a full panel replacement and want to know whether it is necessary, call. We would rather tell you that a couple of breakers will do than sell you a panel you do not need.

How a panel replacement works

  1. A journeyman evaluates the panel, the service entrance, grounding and the load, then quotes the work in writing.
  2. We pull the permit with your city and schedule the job.
  3. We coordinate with PSO for the disconnect and reconnect when the service has to be de-energized.
  4. The old panel comes out, the new panel goes in, and every circuit is landed, labeled and tightened to spec.
  5. Grounding and bonding are brought up to current requirements.
  6. The city inspects the work, PSO reconnects, and we test every circuit before we leave.

On most homes the power is off for most of a working day. If the meter base or service has to change too, it can take longer because PSO and the city inspector are part of the schedule. We plan the day with you in advance so you can arrange around it.

Working with PSO and the city

Panel work in Broken Arrow, Tulsa and most surrounding cities requires a permit and an inspection, and when the service is replaced, PSO has to be involved. Those steps are part of the job, not an extra for you to manage. A customer who had a main panel and a subpanel replaced described it this way:

Had to replace main panel and replace sub panel due to pool pump wiring. John and his guys were very informative and professional. They started around 8am and stayed until the job was complete, not stopping for lunch. Coordinated with PSO for shutting down power and turning back on. There were a couple of glitches but still completed in a timely fashion. Quality of work was great and they were personable about our needs. Cost of project was reasonable and payment options to fit anyone's budget. As a token of doing business, John offered a gift to us to show his appreciation and kindness. Recommend Hot Shot Electric for all your residential electrical needs.

Planning for what comes next

A new panel is the moment to plan ahead. If an EV charger, a hot tub, a shop or a generator inlet is in your future, we size the panel and leave the spaces for it. It is also the right time to add whole-house surge protection, which mounts at the panel and protects everything downstream.

Fuse boxes and very old panels

Some Tulsa-area homes still run on screw-in fuses, and some panels were installed when a house used a fraction of today's power. A fuse box is not dangerous by itself when it is used as designed, but over the decades fuses get swapped for larger ones to stop them blowing, which leaves wiring unprotected. Insurers and buyers often ask about fuse boxes too. Replacing one with a modern breaker panel is one of the most common upgrades we do on older homes.

When the panel comes out, we also look at the service entrance cable, the meter base and the grounding, because an upgrade is only as good as the parts that feed it.

Labeling and a clean panel

Open most older panels and the circuit directory is blank, faded or wrong. After a replacement, every breaker is labeled by what it actually controls, tested room by room, so the next time a breaker trips you know exactly where to look. Wires are dressed neatly, connections are torqued to the manufacturer's specification, and unused openings are covered. A clean panel is easier to inspect, easier to work on later, and a sign the job was done with care.

Cost, financing and warranty

Panel replacements are quoted after a site visit, and estimates for planned work are free. Financing is available on larger projects, and we accept cash, check, debit, all major cards and CashApp. The panel and breakers we install carry our one-year warranty on manufactured items. See pricing for how we quote.

Questions

Panel upgrade and replacement: straight answers

The questions people ask us on the phone, answered the way we answer them.

How long will my power be off during a panel replacement?
On most homes, most of a working day. If the meter base or service entrance is replaced too, it can take longer because PSO has to disconnect and reconnect and the city may need to inspect first. We schedule it with you in advance.
Do I need a bigger panel to add an EV charger or hot tub?
Not always. We do a load calculation first. Sometimes the answer is a new circuit, sometimes a subpanel, and sometimes a service upgrade. You get the options and the price of each.
Do you pull the permit?
Yes. Panel replacements require a permit and inspection in Broken Arrow, Tulsa and most surrounding cities, and we pull it and schedule the inspection as part of the job.
Is my old panel dangerous?
The manufacturer recommendation is to replace panels every 20 to 25 years, and especially if it is a brand such as Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco. Heat, rust, scorch marks and constant tripping are also reasons to have it evaluated by a licensed electrician.
Can you just add a subpanel instead?
Sometimes. If the main panel and service are in good condition and have the capacity, a subpanel can add spaces for new circuits for less than a full replacement. We will tell you which fits your house.
