Straight answer

How do I know if my electrical panel needs to be replaced?

Short answer

Common signs: the panel is 20 to 25 years old or more, it is a brand inspectors and insurers flag, it feels warm or buzzes, shows rust or scorch marks, breakers trip often or will not reset, there is no space for new circuits, or it sits in a closet where code no longer allows it.

The panel is where every circuit in the house starts. When it ages out or was a problem brand to begin with, nothing downstream is as safe as it should be.

Age

Manufacturers suggest replacing breaker panels every 20 to 25 years. Breakers wear, bus bars corrode, and connections loosen. Age alone does not mean the panel is failing, but it is the first thing a journeyman checks on every diagnostic visit we make.

The brand

Several older panel brands are widely flagged by inspectors and insurers, the most widely known being Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok) and Zinsco. The manufacturer recommendation is to replace panels every 20 to 25 years, and especially if you have one of these brands. We keep a short list of obsolete panels the crew will not add breakers to or modify. If yours is one of them, we will tell you and explain the options.

Warning signs you can see or hear

  • The panel door or breakers feel warm
  • Buzzing or crackling from the panel
  • Rust, water stains or scorch marks
  • Breakers that trip often or will not stay on
  • Lights that dim when large appliances start
  • Double-tapped breakers or a panel crowded with tandem breakers
  • No open spaces left for a new circuit

Repair or replace?

Not every panel problem needs a new panel. A failed breaker or a loose connection can often be repaired. A panel that is past its service life, on the flagged list, damaged, or simply out of room for what you want to add (an EV charger, a hot tub, a shop) is usually better replaced. We explain which it is and give you the price before any work.

What a replacement involves

Replacements are permitted and inspected. We schedule PSO's disconnect for the morning the crew arrives and the reconnect as soon as the panel is ready, so the power is off for as short a time as the job allows. Sometimes the meter base needs replacing as well. See panel upgrade and replacement.

The day of a panel replacement

  1. The crew arrives at 8:00 and confirms the plan with you.
  2. PSO disconnects the service in the morning window we scheduled.
  3. The old panel comes out and the new one goes in, with every circuit reconnected and labeled.
  4. PSO reconnects in the early afternoon so the house has power while the crew finishes.
  5. The city inspects the work where a permit is required.

Moving a panel out of a closet

When a panel sits in a clothes closet, replacing it is often the moment to relocate it, commonly to an outside wall or the garage. Relocation adds work, so we price it as an option and explain what changes, and the inspector checks it with the rest of the job.

Follow-up questions

How long is the power off for a panel replacement?
Typically a working day, depending on PSO's disconnect and reconnect windows and the condition of the service. We schedule it with you in advance.
Will my insurance company care about my panel?
Some insurers ask about panel brand and age. A replaced, permitted panel answers the question.
Do I need a bigger panel for an EV charger?
Not always. We check your service size, existing load and open spaces first. Sometimes a new circuit is enough.
